First generation kids

...lp take care of the house. It’s as if we don’t work hard enough at whatever we’re doing, because all we have to do is concentrate on school and nothing else, unlike them. What they don’t understand is that school isn’t everything. Sure it’s important to get a good education, but it’s not necessary to say complete college or university right after we graduate high school. Also, when they were kids, they had to help around either the house a lot, or work in the fields, and that would only leave so much time to do homework. As a result, they believe that because we only go to school, we shouldn’t have any problems with our schooling, and therefore have no problem of going to university and completing it right away. They way we think of it is as though school shouldn’t affect our daily lives, from elementary to university, with our work and other activities, and we should go through school as fast or as slow as we want. There’s also the pressure to have a good social life outside the family, to have connections to make it easier on ourselves later in life. But, how are we -the first generation kids- supposed to do that when they are telling us what we can and can’t do. They tell us that if we want to succeed in life, we need to focus more on ourselves and our education than others and doing whatever we want to do.
