...remember. This took place on the Sahuaro patio during lunch. I was sitting at a table with some of my friends. Robert was telling us about how he hurt his ankle while trying to transition out of the bowl at the Y.M.C.A. skate park. Then a kid walks up. He had been in some of my classes, so I was semi-familiar with him. I never liked him that much, he was always saying something stupid to get attention. He is dressed all in black and has really baggy pants with a pierced lip. I don’t think he showered much because I can smell mildew coming from his clothes. He opens his mouth and starts to speak. “ I saw that you guys got your butt’s handed to you on Friday.” He was referring to a football game that my team lost the week before. This was somewhat of a sore subject for me still. “ That’s why I’m not a dumb jock. You guys only care about sports.” I felt my fists begin to clinch. They were as hard as the hull of a ship. My friends knew I had a short temper. I could see the worry start to creep up their faces. I stood up and said, “Do you know how many different scenarios you have to know to play linebacker?” He shrugs his shoulders and responds, “ What does that have to do with anything?” “ You called me dumb.” I could feel the tension ease up just a little. “The same goes for every other position. It is not an idiots game to play.” The expression on his face changed as if he just saw a train wreck. “As a matter of fact I’m willing to bet that I get better grades than you do.” By now he has nothing to say to me about the situation.
