The fact that this controversy would probably result in Lewis being known more for the comment made to him than the way he plays is really unfair for him because this is not the way a football player would like to be famous for. This controversy would likely cause people to only remember him for what happened and not for what he was like as an athlete. Nik’s teammate Jay McNeil was shocked at what had happened and stated, “This is Canada. That stuff shouldn’t happen here and I’m very disappointed that this happened.” What McNeil said was very true because Canada is supposed to be a multicultural country that sees that it would be even more enriched by recognizing and supporting the distinct cultures of the immigrant communities (Coakly and Donnelly, 265). Having many different races/ethnicities is what makes a country so great because people learn about different cultures and come to not only accept it, but to embrace it as well. Since Canada is a country with many different races/ethnicities, you would think people would have already gotten over the cultural barriers that have developed from the past and come to be proud that they live in a nation that is so diverse. The fact that we are so diverse should be looked at as an opportunity to gain perspective about other people’s way of life, which in turn helps better ourselves since it gives us knowledge of different cultures and helps us understand and identify with different races/ethnicities.
