...sions. They believed democracy was a meaning of equal decision making and not electing a person in charge to decide for everyone. They did not believe in passing laws that was contrary to another. There the citizens, as members of the assembly, participated directly in the making of their laws. Democracy, as it is defined today, simply means that the people get o decides the institutions and laws that will govern them and their land. In most ways the Athens was democratic, but in a several ways they were not. What makes them democratic is the fact that all of the decisions were influenced by the populations’ feelings and votes. However, what makes them non-democratic is the fact that even though majority ruled, all of the decisions were decided by the upper class people. Slaves, lower class, and non-citizens were unable to participate in any deciding factors. If democracy is chosen by the people and for the people, then everyone should have a say in what happens in their society. The Athens’ government is similar to our government in several ways. One, we also have one head ruler and he neither has full control over all of the decisions that are made in our society. He is able to have his actions rejected if the people of the government feel as though his decision is neither sensible nor best for our country. Two, our government is composed mostly of all males. Females even though are taken into consideration at times, they still do not have much say in what happens. Last but not least, those that are non-citizens or has been incarcerated, even if they are citizens, cannot not vote just like how the slaves, lower class, and non-citizens of the Athens did not have a say in anything.
