...“faded worn-out knapsack.” A close reading of this poem revealed to me a person in search for a lost friendship because of a misunderstanding. Missing his friend so much, the character reminisces the days they spent together. The first stanza first line “I didn’t think I’d want to travel this road” made me assume that the main character is undecided about which decision to make, but when his friend came, he found someone whom he could trust and rely on and this trust developed into a friendship. In the second stanza, the journals, camera, and compass are used as symbols. These symbols are used to depict that the main character’s friend is about to leave for a journey. He just watched as his friend left him for a journey which means that a barrier has been probably keeping them away from each other. This barrier could probably be some sort of a misunderstanding between two people. The line “here at the fork … myself unfolding” in the third stanza shows a feeling of regret. The character regrets that he was not able to accompany his friend in his journey that he decided to forgive and forget all the bitterness between them.
