...n my sleeve For daws to peck at I am not what I am ( I.i.60-65). When Cassio is given his position, bitterness is created within Iago towards Cassio. Iago develops envy towards Cassio. This consequently causes Iago to form a plan to get even with Cassio. Once Iago continues to think in this manner, he makes it his duty to punish Cassio in any way possible. For example, he begins his plan by telling Brabantio that his daughter snuck out and married the Moor, Othello. This is an important part of the play because if Iago had gotten the promotion, he would not have a reason to seek vengeance on Cassio In addition, Emilia also helps with another important event in the play that leads to the tragedy. When Iago primarily begins trying to influence Othello’s mind, he had no real proof to believe Iago’s uncertainties. (Othello says to Iago) For she had eyes chose me. No Iago I’ll see before I dought; when I dought, prove; And on the proof, there is no more but this Away at once with love and jealousy ( III.iii.187-190). However, when Emilia steals the handkerchief from Desdemona’s quarters, and then she gives it to her husband, Iago gains the real proof that Othello had requested, and uses it as the main part of his plan by making Othello believe Desdemona gave it to Cassio. From this point on in the book, everything centers on the handkerchief and who has it in their possession, from Emilia to Bianca. Because this proves if the story Iago is telling Othello is really true. For that reason, if Emilia had not taken the handkerchief from Desdemona’s quarters, Iago’s plans might not have worked. Lastly, the last important event leading to the tragedy in Othello, was Othello overhearing the conversation between Cassio and Iago.
