Humans often lose track of what is important in there lives and end up suffering because of it. These things are most likely to be products that are not a necessity but a desire. For example, people now fill their driveways with exotic sports cars and fill their closets with designer clothes and shoes because it makes them feel good and don’t think twice about how they could be negatively effecting society by doing this. Consumerism has affected individuals and society in a negative way through the media. The media is a network that is used to sell products to individuals in society. Television is one of the main sources of communication that the media uses to contact individuals and help sell their products. Most often commercials and advertisements are promoting materialistic objects that don’t really serve a purpose or benefit society in any way. The media seems to have a great influence on society and brainwashes people into thinking or acting a certain way. For example in commercials skinny female models and muscular male models look like they are having the greatest time of their life while promoting various products. Therefore they shape society into thinking that everyone should look and act this way and that the product will make them happy if they buy it. This most likely causes people to have an unrealistic image in their head of what they should look, act, and dress like. These images created by the media most likely cause individuals to be unhappy with there self image and influence them to go out and by products which they don’t need to enhance their look and make them feel better, when in reality it probably won’t. Celebrities as role models also seem to influence society in many negative ways. They seem to set trends and fashions for most people in society. People see celebrities with all the glamorous objects in life and therefore they want to be like them. This most likely causes people to go out and buy all the ridiculous material objects that they see the actors with. A major negative concern of consumerism is its effects on the environment. Air, water and soil are all vital components that all living things need to survive. One of the main factors that is damaging our environment is the pollution that is created from all of the various material items that mankind has created. Excess packaging of products accounts for a large amount of pollution and garbage in the environment. A large amount of unnecessary materials are used in the production of elaborate packaging, used to influence consumers into buying the product because it looks good. People then often purchase the product without any regard to quality because the packaging looks so tempting. Another major factor contributing to pollution is ...
