However, they both have changed and grown though out the story. By the end of the film, we see Will’s thoughts recreated. The talent show gives us a chance to see how Will has changed, how far he has come. Secondly, why does Rachel break up with Will in the film? Why didn’t she give him a chance? It is hard, and might I add impossible, to add every single detail into the final work of the film and it remain under two hours. It takes a lot less time for Rachel to just break up with Will after finding out he lied to her about his fake son, than for her to think about it and consider forgiving him. In the book once Rachel beings thinking about why Will lied to her, she finds it rather interesting and that he is rather interesting for doing so. Thirdly, the talent show is also an opportunity to make things right with Rachel. Although this was not his motive in saving Marcus on stage. Will blew his shot with Rachel and in her eyes he has redeemed himself. Once she sees Will on stage with Marcus, clearly saving his social life, she sees a side of Will she has never seen before. A loving, caring, and sincere side. What woman wouldn’t melt in her chair and give him another chance? Finally, we see that Marcus has gone through a complete change by the end of the book and film. The main idea stays the same, that he matures and grows internally and externally while learning about life, but it has very different aspects. Marcus is not the same twelve year old boy that he once was in the beginning of the story, he has friends now, he is popular, his shoes don’t get stolen, and he is happy. Although we see he has matured internally, in the way he thinks, feels, and views the world, the book goes into this with much greater detail. Here is an example from the book describing how Marcus has matured. “Marcus was older than Ali now. The first time they had met, when Marcus had been Will’s son for the afternoon, Ali had appeared to be Marcus’s senior by many years, but his explosion that day had blown his cover a little bit, and in any case Marcus had moved on in the intervening months.
