My Educational Philosophy
...t. The most significant one that I can recall is the emphasis on the magnitude of education and how it can either make or break you as a person. My parents forced me into believing that without a proper education, and particularly without a college degree, I would be bagging groceries in Shoprite for the rest of my life! They continually tried to make me feel bad for the lack of excellent and balanced education in the United States, as if it was my fault. They excessively bashed my teachers and administrators for not teaching the proper things for the grade level that I was in. A prime example of their educational standards in Ukraine would be the fact that they knew all the countries and their capitals by the age of 10, and I was merely just learning the geography of the United States. Education in their homeland was severe on both the shoulders of the educators and the students, but they fared exceptionally and this I cannot argue. Granted, nobody can expect me to take the blame seriously for what America doesn’t do “right” (according to my parents), but what I took out of my upbringing was the simple fact that a hardcore education is exceedingly essential. Now the only question remaining is how will I apply this basic philosophy into my work as a teacher?
