Even though, both figures, Jesus and Beowulf don’t physically exist in our presence today, they both live through stories. Evil takes its toll and it appears in Beowulf that Grendel and the Dragon side with the prince of darkness. For example, Grendel, appearing evil and demonic, creeps out from the foot of misty hills and bogs, bearing God’s hatred and hoping to kill anyone that he met. Appearing devilish, Grendel obtains God’s hatred upon him. Also, satanic beings appear determined to bring about destruction upon people and objects, as Grendel’s mission to kill human beings turns to its motives for its existence. Grendel could correspond to Satan’s demons that try to possess humans in order to bring destruction upon mankind. The same dragon that kills Beowulf causes destruction upon the Geats and hurries back to its tower to its hidden treasure. The dragon, driven by its pride and greed, returns to its precious jewelry, gold and treasures. Just as the beast causes Beowulf’s death, so did Satan by becoming a scaly dragon-like serpent in the Garden of Eden. He brought about sin that led to Jesus’s innocent, yet necessary, death to forgive all sins for eternity because of the devil’s interference with mankind. So, the Dragon could appear as the equivalent of Satan, and Grendel portraying an evil demon, while Beowulf and Jesus continue to similarly share the same role. Other characteristics of Christian themes seem to have come from the Bible to Beowulf. For example, when Beowulf’s ashes became sealed within the walls, twelve of the bravest Geats start to tell stories of his greatness and bravery. The theme of Beowulf’...
