Racial prejudice may result in an employer not hiring a person, failing to promote or giving harsher duties or imposing harsher working conditions, or firing, someone, in whole or in part due to his/her race. “In some cases, the basis for discrimination is simply that the people discriminating perceive the targets of discrimination to be different from themselves” (WordIQ.com, 2002). The racial discrimination of Mexicans in United States is not caused by one single reason. This kind of discrimination originates from many factors like the ignorance about other cultures, the fear of other races, and stereotypes (Freedman, 2001). For example, many North Americans ignore that Mexicans are already part of the economy, society and Political life of the United States, and because of that many Americans consider at Mexicans as invaders and stealers, who only damage the United States. An other example is the stereotype: “The lazy Mexican” (WordIQ.com, 2002). This stereotype made think the North American that Mexicans think are only parasites that live at the cost of their country and effort. To avoid the racial discrimination is necessary many changes in the two countries Mexico and United States. These changes need to be done from the laws against the racial discrimination, until the change of mentality of the people. To accomplish these changes, first is necessary to teach the North American children that the people of other race are different in characteristics but equal in their human value (Banton, 1996). This idea can be realize with the implementation of programs of anti- racism in the North American schools. In addition, it is very important eliminate the Mexican stereotype in the mass media in United States and Mexico. This elimination can be accomplish, with new laws that forbid or the use of the stereotypes “Lazy Mexican”, “Stealer Mexican”, etc. in the TV, radio, movies or any other mass media (WordIQ.com, 2002).
