... of Omelas, a side you do not see on t.v., something secret, kept away from the public and is for Omelas’ eyes and ears only. Omelas is supposed to be glamour, a perfect life for everyone. Is sacrificing a young child for people’s sake be considered a utopian society? This is selfish and as much as they think it’s wrong, they do nothing. Instead they hide him in a damp miniature cellar, and keep him locked up away from all the rainbows and sunshine. The citizens do not know what happiness is when they have never felt pain, grief, and sorrow. If someone wins the lottery they suddenly feel all excited, pumped, and happy. Why? It is because they rarely have good fortune and they feel great when suddenly something good happens to them. In Omelas, their child sacrifice leads to them always having good and a happy life. Always bringing them luck and joy. After a while, the rare feeling becomes part of their everyday life. This weakens them. If they came back to reality, they won’t be able to survive. They think they’re happy, but happiness no longer exist. Without happiness, life has no longer a meaning. People walk by, watch the child’s suffering and do nothing to help him in order to keep their “utopian” way of life. They sometimes visit him, some feel disgust, others feel superior. Some feel anger and feel the need to help him bring him out into the sunlight and feed it. Unfortunately th...
