Analysis of My Papa's Waltz
...kitchen, forming images of a father and son destructively romping around the kitchen waltzing, knocking pans over as the mother looked on discontent. The lines, “The whiskey on your breath could make a small boy dizzy” and “With a palm caked hard by dirt”, describe the father as probably a blue collar worker and also as a drunk. The line, “But I hung on like death: such waltzing was not easy.” implies that the dance may not have been altogether enjoyable for the child. The final line of the poem, “Then waltzed me off to bed still clinging to your shirt” shows the child is dependent on his father.
