Jack's »dark side« is obvious to us, readers, before – it shows itself in the first chapter – when Jack's first attempt to kill the pig fail, his quote "next time…" is menacing. It also shows in second chapter, when Jack says that the conch doesn't count on the mountain. From that point on, the boys difference in opinions and characters only intensifies. In the second chapter we can see similarity between Ralph to Jack. They both oppress their fear when the little boy with the birthmark mentions the snake-like beastie. They calm the boys by saying that the beast is not real, but deep inside them, they both have doubts. Their fear for a moment prevails over Ralph’s sense of order and Jack’s savagery.
