In his sixth novel, Goodbye Mr. Chips, Hilton wrote in loving memory of his schoolmaster father and in tribute to his profession. It began as the 1933 Christmas supplement for the British Weekly. Having to be written in four days, Hilton conceived the idea for the story while riding his bicycle through the English countryside and remembering his school days.
