issues with dialects
...has little to do with education although a large portion of minority students are in lower economic class. Race itself is not a factor in learning, but how the students are being taught is a factor. I believe that students that come from the same area and background have the same capabilities in writing regardless of race. The major problem with race is that each race has their own unique dialect. A good example of this is Robert Burns’s poem “For A that and A that.” The uniqueness of this poem is how Robert Burns uses his Scottish background to express his ideas. The poem explains how the Scottish were looked down upon by the British because their culture was not as civilized. This poem has a direct connection with our society today, because in our country blacks have their uniqueness, Hispanics have their uniqueness, and whites have their own uniqueness. Since the United States has this type of original atmosphere, which we are so proud of, I don’t understand why people want a certain standard for education. If we all talked the same and learned the same our country would not be as advanced and therefore we wouldn’t have the freedom the U.S. is so well known to glorify. Race is a big factor in education. I disagree with all the articles that talk about how white students learn differently then black students. An example of how teachers teach students differently is in the article “Eating on the street,” by Clement Schaufsma when one of the teachers says that blacks should teach blacks and whites should teach whites. This is so wrong because this just means that each group has their own standard for education. Therefore making the educational system even more confined. If we started to teach this way our education programs would go nowhere because there would be no diversity and we need diversity to succeed in this world because everywhere we look we see people from different backgrounds and cultures. I believe students should experience everything in their education. When I say everything I mean be able to interact with students of a different race and economic background. I thought it was great to see whites and blacks interact in Lisa Delpits article because all the white students wanted to go to the inner city schools, and there was even a waiting list for the white students. Also if teachers wanted to teach their own race they’re making the whole literac...
