An Explication of “The Piazza Piece”

The second line of the poem says, “Your ears are soft and small and listen to an old man not at all.”(Pearson 1229) this piece of the poem is describing her as the old man sees her soft and supple not as he views, older woman wrinkled, and harden by age. She still will not listen to what the older man has to say she is probably smart on that one. She is looking for a young man to whisper and sigh in her ear not the older man who she is not attracted to at all. He tells her she does not have enough time to be picky with what she chooses and that she is getting older or past her prime and that she should pick him before she is past her marrying age. Then he tries to romance her by speaking of the moon singing. He tells her that he must have his lady soon because he is an older man and may not have a long time before he will be too old for anything. The second paragraph tells us of the women’s point of view and what she thinks of this older man and what she wants. She tells us that she is lady young in beauty waiting until her true love comes and then they kiss. She thinks that she is too good for this old man and doesn’t want anything to do with this old man. She asks what old man is this whose words she can not hear. She can not believe that this old man is after her and does not want to hear his words she thinks she must be dreaming to see this old man. She tells him to get back from her trellis before she screams. ...
