... In the story, "Dr. Heidegger's Experiment", Hawthorne uses three symbols of the natural world. The rose, butterfly and water. In the story, the symbol of the rose indicates everlasting love between Dr. Heideggers and the love of his life. Dr. Heidegger attempts to perform an experiment on his soon to be wife and it goes terribly wrong. She passes away. The rose that was given to him to wear on their wedding day is withered away and kept in a black book. Dr. Heidegger performs an experiment with the water and it becomes a beautiful rose again sumbolizing that their love will never die. The butterfly is a symbol of metamorphosis and makes you wonder if it is right to change metamorphic of a person's life. In the story, the butterfly symoblizes whether it's right to change a person's life as Dr. Heidegger is about to do to four elderly people. Eventhough it could be a wonderful thing, it might turn out to be something truly ugly. Although the water, in the story, seems to be truly wonderful, it may not be. In the story, everyone of these elderly people engage in using this water as if it were some kind of God. So powerful that if would make them beautiful.
