... the “perfect” female figure, tall, thin, long legs, and flawless. Many women who see these commercials think that they can look like this through exercise and dieting. They also think that they can be transformed by just buying the product that the woman on the commercial is advertising. But the fact is only five percent of American women look like this. This isn’t just a concept for white women. Women of color suffer the same and also different types of objectification. In the ads that Jean showed on her movie women of color were depicted as animals or dressed up as such. She showed examples of girls being dressed as tigers or in zebra print outfits. But don’t think that all of this objectification has gone un-noticed. There was an ad put out specifically on how women are looked at as mere objects. The ad focused on the link between sexism and advertising. One of the points the ad wanted to cover was the fact that many ads focus just on a certain part of the woman’s body. She showed an advertisement that just focused on the woman’s butt. Another part of the body that the American society today relates to is breasts. When these advertisers show these breasts more people than are targeted see these commercials. For example, younger girls that are just coming into adolescence, and when these girls see these ads their self-esteem falls because they don’t have breast like that and if they don’t then they are not perfect. Everyone is striving to be perfect. But does this objectification only happen to women? Many men are also subjected to this but it is not as related to the body as it is with women. With women it is always about how they look. But they are only acceptable if they are thin, young, and white. Many ads depict boys as active and girls as passive. Jean showed many ads with boys running or being in motion and girls with their hands over their mouth. When a boy and girl are in an ad together the boy is taller, active and looking down at the girl with the girl looking up at the boy and being passive. This is true unless color is involved.
