Original Sin

...s. The audience soon discovers the fictitious nature of Julia’s heart when introduced to the downside of her bi-polar character, Bonny Castle. The uncovering of her secret, that she had killed the “real” Julia and poses as her, creates doubt and suspense in the equation. The plot continues to unfold slowly and leads us further into the twisted mind of Julia Russel/ Bonny Castle. The slow-motion shots and “flashy jump cuts,” which are used to create suspense and diversity throughout the film, take the viewers back to the prison, where once again the time and setting are specific to the effects of the film: An instrument is shown, that is made to break the neck of a person, and one realizes that this method of execution is no longer seen in most parts of the world. In less than minutes the easily predicted plot of Original Sin is thrown into twists and turns, when Jolie turns up missing along with the majority of Luis’s riches. Luis falls into a state of depression and has a chance meeting with a detective, by the name of Downs, at a whorehouse. He and the detective discuss his anguish and talk of finding and killing Julia. The two decide to journey to Havana to elucidate the mystery of Bonny Castle. In this setting the audience is met with the climax. Luis finds Julia in a restaurant and hides in her hotel room where he plans to murder her. Just as the viewers believe they have seen the last of Julia, they soon come to find that they have been fooled again. Jolie somehow finds her way back into Banderas’s heart and he meets her as Bonny Castle for the first time. They move to Cardenas, as fugitives, to escape capture. They buy a house together and somehow stay unnoticed. This is time and setting specific, in that if this were to be in the present, and in the United States, they would not remain unfound for so long. As time passes, we find that Julia and detective Downs are in cahoots. They plan to bankrupt Luis and murder him. Julia disapproves of the plan but is forced into it by the detective. Luis and Bonny move back to Havana in a poor part of town where Bonny says, “they will go unnoticed.” When they run short of money Luis goes to Santiago to sell his share of the company and when he returns death awaits him. Bonny leaves one night to go to the pharmacist to get rat poisoning but meets with the detective first. Little does she know Luis follows close behind. When Bonny returns she poisons Luis’s cof...
