...ed Paris “ A moveable Feast”, because wherever you go in that city everybody is sitting down having a good time at the club , bars, inside their own private sanctuary, or café, even Ecstasy was invented by then just nobody knew about it for about another 70 years or so. Around that time women would outgrow the older generation by cutting their hair short and back then it was called hair of the “bob” , because it looked like a man’s haircut, it made women feel free to do what they want and when they want . So right there you can see why Brett’s hair was so short like a guy and the reason she refused to let it grow out for Pedro to look more woman like. This way of life sculpted and made Lady Brett Ashley the woman she is . Brett’s is in her mid thirties , beautiful as ever to the naked eye and is married, on her way of getting divorced. She has quiet an appetite for sex and wont keep it under control. She runs the streets of Paris with homosexual men and basically lives it up. Nowadays you would call her a female version of the word P.I.M.P. , because if she knows a man is infatuated with her she will sleep with him and discard of him whenever she pleases as long as she got what she wanted., whether it be money or anything of value to her. A lot of people would denounce this character as somebody harsh, when really she’s doing all she knows how to do to survive and that’s to use her sexual presence as power and control over men. Brett wants to settle down with one guy but the problem with that is that Mr. Jake Barnes has lost a good portion of his genital area to injury from the war so he can’t perform any kind of sexual healing on her and even as strong as her love is for him she’s not willing to give up sex in other words Jake loves Brett, Brett loves sex. Along with all of that she is also a good manipulator, throughout the whole book she plays upon different men’s love for her and especially with Jake she uses his love to gain sympathy, tremendous support and emotional support. Brett is a clear example of how far from the truth real love is from the “ lost generation “ for women as well as men. Most of the men in this book are lonely and not happy with their present life, for example Robert who still has not lost the real “true love” mentality that supposedly the rest of the world lost along with their morality, in which he has a fling with Brett in which Brett once again used him and didn’t care to do anything else with him , where as Robert fell deeply for her and followed her around like a dog following a bone for majority of the story. She preys on lonely weak men so she can feel the dominance in which she gets a thrill over. Well she met her match when she started falling in love with Pedro because in a sense he was as dominant as her knowing how to ease Brett similar to his experiences in bull fighting. He wanted her to grow out her hair and marry him, at this time you see the true sensitive sincere side of Brett because this is the only time she left a man for his own good sake for she claims she would of ruined him and his further quest to become the best bull fighter to ever live. I think regardless of how she felt about Pedro, she would 100% stay loyal to Jake if his war wounds didn’t injure him at that particular spot, I bring this up because Jake and Brett were riding in a taxi together and they started to kiss but she quickly pulls away and tells him she cant go through with it because “ she turns to jelly “ when she touches him, so Jake gets slightly upset and suggests to her that maybe they shouldn’t see each other anymore and she refused that idea quickly. Brett deals with her pain and losses by getting deeper in alcohol usage. Hemingway uses Brett’s many affairs to build bitter rivals , for example when Mike tells Robert, who cares if he slept with Brett because she slept with a lot better kind of men. Again Hemingway uses her affairs against her when Mike informed Robert ( crazy about Brett) that Brett went of with young bullfighter to their honeymoon, and because of this Robert goes on a psycho rampage and beats up Pedro and stirring up more problems. Because of the fact that she is not willing to settle down and have an ideal family just like a normal woman in the states , tells you she rejects all morals and values of any kind and lives in her own world where she is the young princess riding over her land exactly not knowing what she’s looking for. Brett frequently gets drunk to where she doesn’t remember anything that happened the night before. Also, not only is a lost child in this era she’s really one of the few women in the 1920s to start the whole independent women era soon to come. Another side of Brett that surprised me was when Robert Cohn knocked out Jake ,who I thought up to this point really compassionately loved him, because the next day when she saw Jake she asked him if he had gotten beat up and he played it off like it wasn’t a severe beating or anything which it really wasn’t because it was just a knockout but that is besides the point. The point I’m trying to make is that she wasn’t worried about what happened to Jake , she actually didn’t seem that concerned tell you the truth about his situation compared to when Pedro caught a beating from Robert she was on her knees to take care of almost a stranger. Brett wants to be fair with Jake but her only problem is that she gets tangled up with al...
