...¡°Because he is our servant.¡± said she. ¡°But, he is always nice. He works so hard. I think he is really good guy.¡± I said. ¡°Just don¡¯t do it, son! If your father ever saw your hanging out with Dol-soe, he wouldn¡¯t take it lying down!¡± said she. I really didn¡¯t know why I can¡¯t be a friend with Dol-soe. But, I couldn¡¯t help disobeying what mother told me to do. Because it was against ¡®Hyo¡¯ in Confucianism. As I grew older, I got tired of studying Confucianism. It was just too boring. Confucianism wasn¡¯t attractive any more to me. Father wanted me to keep studying hard. He stopped my room every night and asked me what I¡¯ve studied for the day. I always told him that I had covered such and such which I really didn¡¯t study. But he never suspected me. It seemed that he really didn¡¯t understand what I was talking about. I wondered how he could pass the Social Service Examination. In 1892, when I was 19 years old, my father became a county head of Go-Bu County. He was so proud of himself. So, he threw a big party on the day he became a county head. I knew he threw a party not with his own money but with the county budget. That made me so mad at father. From that time I started to be against my father. One day, I remembered it was November 1893, I went for a walk to the market called ¡®Mal-Mok(¸»¸ñ)¡¯ to refresh myself. There was a group of people listening to a guy. He was a quite short guy. People called him ¡®Nok-Doo(³ìµÎ)¡¯. I approached to the group and listened to what he was trying to say. I was so surprised that he was talking about my father. He was groaning under a heavy burden of local taxes. Every people agreed with him. He looked like a hero for the peasants. I expected that there would be people against my father. But it turned out to be more serious that I expected. I approached to the guy, Nok-Doo. Fortunately, I could get a chance to talk with him. In fact, I was a little bit scared to say that I was a son of Cho, Byung-Gop, but I told him frankly. And then, he introduced himself to me that he was Chun, Bong-Joon. ¡°I admit that there is something wrong with my father¡¯s policy. However, among those wrong things, which one is the worst policy do you think?¡± I asked. He replied to me in a firm attitude, ¡°He shouldn¡¯t have imposed tax on ¡®Man-Suk¡¯ reservoir. He told us that we didn¡¯t have to pay tax for the reservoir for one year. But he didn¡¯t keep the promise. Instead keeping his words, he levied more taxes upon us. Because of a series of famine, we have a hard time in farming. How can we pay more taxes? How can we survive?¡± I also figured out Chun, Bong-Joon¡¯s dad was tortured and executed by my father, when he protested against my father. I really felt sorry for them. I also thought that there would be a big problem, if I don¡¯t do anything to solve these problems. I told Chun, Bong-Joon to go to my father and request him to reduce the tax. On that night, I talked to my father that people were all against the reservoir tax. So, I recommended him to reduce the tax. I told him people are really suffering from farming because of a series of famine. But, he wouldn¡¯t listen to me. He just enjoyed drinking with Gi-Saengs. I thought he was impossible. Anyway, a couple of days later, Chon, Bong-Joon came to father¡¯s office as I told him to do. He asked my father to reduce the reservoir tax. Without any reservation, father ordered his soldiers to beat him. And then, he was kicked out. The very next day, I visited Chun,Bong-Joon¡¯s home and talked to him that I was really sorry for things went wrong. I also told him that I would try to help him. And he said, ¡°Thank you!¡± About two week later from that incident, father became a county head of Ik-San County. So my family moved into Ik-San County. We didn¡¯t stay there so long. Approximately 2 month later my father became a head county of Ik-San County, he was reassigned to Go-Bu County again. Two days before my father assume the position of head county of Go-Bu County, I went to Chun, Bong-Joon to let him know that news. Somehow he already knew my father would become head county again. And he told me that nothing had been changed i...
