In Ultimate, you don’t just throw the disk and hope that it goes as straight as possible, there is a lot of technique involved! When a player is handling the disk, there are numerous grips to consider depending on what situation he is in; the most common being the backhand grip or beginner’s grip. The Backhand grip is characterized by the index finger of the throwing hand being placed along the outer rim and the middle finger extended towards the central part of the disk while the rest of the fingers grip the disk. Although there are variations of this beginners throw, this is the one that most players find comfortable. The power grip is another throw popular among both experienced and beginning players. In this throw all fingers are gripping the rim tightly almost like a fist; the appeal of this grip is the extra amount of power that can be put into the throw allowing the player to reach further distances down the field. The power grip however, does make for a much less accurate throw so it’s mostly used to cover long distances. A combination of the two previous grips gives us the hybrid grip! This Grip allows there to be more power in the throw while at the same time giving the disk the support it needs for better accuracy and control. This grips gives support in an unusual manner in that the middle finger is partly extended toward the center of the disk while the rest of the fingers grip the disk tightly. This grip makes various types of throws a bit easier, including high backhands. Forehand grips usually pertain to a type of throw called a flick which is almost all based on the snap of the wrist.
