At this point Romeo has realised it is love at first sight. As Romeo stands in wonder, he is observed by Tybalt who acknowledges him by hearing his Montague voice. “This by his voice, should be a Montague, Fetch me my rapier, boy”. Tybalt is instantly aggressive and wants to kill Romeo. “Now by the stock and honour of my kin, To strike him dead I hold it not a sin”. This is a rhyming couplet, which gives emphasis to the contrast of love and hatred in this scene. Tybalt proves the hatred and his malevolence with the words; “Uncle, this is a Montegue, our foe: A villain that is hither come in spite, To scorn at our solemnity this night”. This is another rhyming couplet, Shakespeare uses this to make his words emphatic. Lord Capulet calmly tries to talk to Tybalt and bring him round by reminding him how popular Romeo is in Verona, and tells him not to hurt Romeo. Tybalt is shocked by Lord Capulet’s reaction because it wasn’t what he expected to hear. “It fits when such a villain is a guest: I’ll not endure him”. Capulet sticks to his instincts and says to Tybalt, “You’ll make a mutiny among my guests!” This means that if anything should ruin his party then it will be Tybalt’s fault for troublemaking. Lord Capulet would also be beheaded, this is why Capulet gets very angry with Tybalt; he is a very emotional man. Whilst Tybalt is talking to his Uncle, his eyes are off Romeo, and it gives Romeo a chance to approach Juliet. This is when Tybalt dramatically threatens Romeo. His violent language echoes around the stage as Shakespeare begins a sonnet. Romeo unfolds the religious image for the first four lines he says to Juliet. At the end of every other line Shakespeare rhymes the last word. “If I profane with my unworthiest hand, This holy shrine, the gentle sin in this, My lips, two blushing pilgrims, ready stand to smooth rough touch with a tender kiss”.
