...g the scenery flash by from a car window, France (Mireille Perrier) is drawn back into her memories of an earlier time when she rode through the countryside with her mother and father, Aime'e (Giulia Boschi) and Marc (Franc ois Cluzet), and their house servant, Prote'e (Isaach de Bankole'). The relationship between young France (Ce'cile Ducasse) and the servant is the movie's focus point despite for the racial tensions. France's closest friend is Protee. Smooth-skinned and ebony-dark, Prote'e has the resemblance of a young black god with his handsome and powerful, physique. They share riddles and spend time together. Protee doesn’t really know the girl at first, but he gives it a chance and they start to really like each other. He would feed her ants and interact with her more than anyone else in the family. One problem that Protee has caused in the family is his relationship he has with the girls mother. Protee's sexual yearning for France's mother, and hers for him, is a source of tension in the household. This and other tensions that have been gathering are brought to the surface when a group of travelers from a downed plane arrive at the compound.
