There was enough to eat and Snowball, one of the pig leaders, is well liked and seems fair to all opinions presented before him during Sunday meetings. While Snowball is organizing “The Egg Production Committee” for the hens, his sinister rival, Napoleon is plotting a takeover. Napoleon is raising puppies, which will grow up to guard him and simply follow orders, no matter the price. The dogs attack Snowball and drive him off the farm. After that, things change drastically for the animals. Sunday morning meetings stop and one by one, the commandments are broken. Snowball is now the scapegoat for all that goes wrong at Animal Farm such as food shortages or lost items. The pigs take up residence at the farmhouse, which is strictly prohibited. Napoleon calls a meeting and several confessions are given as to errant behavior. Napoleons dogs rip the hapless animals throats out. The barn air is heavy with blood and misery. Still, they come forward and confess. Clover, the horse, is stunned and can only begin singing Animal Farm’s patriotic song, The Beasts of England. Squealer, the only animal that could read and write tells Clover that The Beasts of England will be sung no more. Boxer, the strongest and hardest working animal becomes ill. Instead of calling a veterinarian, he is hauled off to the glue factory since his usefulness is worn out. The van in which the dying Boxer is taken away has the words “Horse Slaughter” on the sides.
