Stereotypes
... a lot of time with him through our lives, and kids liked to give him a hard time. He would wear tight jeans and other weird looking pants with tight shirts. What that group of kids did not know was that he had many girls that they did not see. After awhile of stereotyping him they would stereotype us, by saying " oh they must be gay too" or "they are the preps that act like fags." Our Art teacher took us to the side one day and told us to start ignoring everything they say. We took her advice and the next day when they kids made fun of us we acted like we did not hear them. For a couple weeks we continued to ignore them and they finally quit. Our senior year the same kids started talking to us and hanging out with us outside of school. They realized that my friend and us were not gay, and how much fun we have outside of school. Eventually, they apologized for stereotyping us all through high school. We accepted their apology, after all we were all friends anyways. Everyone experiences different stereotypes that's why there are so many ways stereotyping is negatively effective. College kids have a tendency to stereotype as well, but its more less hazing because of a certain style, ethnicity, race, or looks. One weekend early this year my friends and I drove down to Ohio University to visit some friends of ours. We were invited to a fraternity party that night by our friend's boyfriend. Deciding to go we had no idea what we were in for. We walked into the fraternity house and the first thing said by one of the brothers was " hey look at those haircuts, those kids look like surfers!" The guys in the house kept making fun of the way we dressed, the way we talked, and our hair. They didn't even know us or give us a chance to fit in, they immediately degraded us from themselves. It was clear to us and our friends from the University that we were being stereotyped, so we left within an hour. Later on that weekend we saw a couple of the brothers who were making fun of us at the party. Once again they began calling us surfers, following us continuing to make fun of our style of living. Even though we were begin followed and made of we shook them off and walked to our friends dorm room. Finally, it was Sunday and we were leaving Ohio University, it was a horrible experience at a college because of that group of kids who made our weekend rough. Kids we'll find anyway possible to make themselves look better than one another, even stooping as low as to making fun of someone. Stereotype situations differ from person to person and everyone experiences them. Another experience of stereotyping that I witnessed, came from here Kent State University. An African American student in my orientation class was asked a question by the student teachers about the diversity of Kent State University. The girl replied " I feel very uncomfortable sometimes at this Univer...
