Mice and Men
...in a deep tragedy. The book has many themes and one big one is “fragility of dreams”. Many of the characters dreams never go as planned. This book is based on the poem called “To a Mouse On Turning Up Her Nest With A Plough” which pretty much means “fragility of dreams.” Three characters that have their dreams destroyed are Lennie and George, Candy, and Crooks. The two major characters who have their dreams destroyed in Of Mice and Men are George and Lennie. George and Lennie (but mostly Lennie) always dreamed about owning a small house with a lot of land. “‘we’re gonna get the jack together and we’re gonna have a little house and a couple of acres an’ a cow and some pigs’.” (pg.14). George never actually believed it could possibly happen until Candy stepped into George and Lennie’s lives. Candy had hundreds of dollars saved up in the bank and offered to help buy the house and live with them. “‘S’pose I went with you guys. Tha’s three hundred an’ fifty bucks I’d put in’.” (pg.59). All this could have happened until Lennie accidentally killed Curly’s wife. After that all hopes failed for George and Lennie. Though George and Lennie were not the only ones who lost hopes for the house. A second character who has their dreams destroyed is Candy. Candy is an old worker at the ranch and he lost his arm when he was younger so over the years he has been swamping. Candy does not want to be working on the ranch for much longer since noticed the boss was going to get rid of him soon. “‘They’ll can me purty soon. Jus’ as soon as I can’t swamp out no bunk houses they’ll put me on the county’.” (pg.60). All of a sudden Candy gained tremendous hope that his life will get better from the idea George and Lennie had about the house.
