BREAST CANCER

...States were small, very treatable, early-stage tumors. B) I personally became interested in this subject because Kimberly, whom I mentioned a moment ago, is my cousin. Specific Purpose: So in my presentation I will share with you the knowledge I obtained about Breast cancer. In doing so I hope you will have a better understanding about Breast cancer. Forecast: I will do this by: 1) First providing you with the definition of Breast cancer 2) Second by providing you with the anatomy of the breast and 3) Finally by providing you with information on how Breast cancer is treated. Body: Point#1: Let me begin by providing you with the definition of Breast cancer. Breast cancer is cancer that affects the breast. The vast majority of breast cancer occurs in women, although men can develop breast cancer too. Cancer is the name for a group of diseases in which the body’s cells are changed in appearance and function. Such abnormal cells can grow out of control and form a mass or tumor. When abnormal cells originate in the breast tissue, the mass is called a breast tumor. A breast tumor is considered benign if it is limited to a few cell layers and does not invade surrounding tissues or organs. Yet if the tumor spreads to surrounding tissues or organs, it is considered malignant, or cancerous. Carcinoma is the term used to define most common cancers that arise from the surface or lining of the breast. By contrast, sarcoma is the term used to define tumors that arise from bone, muscle, fat, or connective tissue. Point#2: [PUT UP VISUAL AID] The breasts are in essence, a collection of fatty tissue and glands that have been adapted to secrete milk after a woman gives birth. The glands that produce milk are called lobules and the tubes that connect them to the nipples are called ducts. About 15 to 20 ducts come together near the areola (dark circular area around the nipple) to form ampullae’s. Which stores the milk before it reaches the nipple surface. Montgomery’s glands are small oil glands that are located around each areola. They release a lubricant that protects the nipples during nursing. [PUT THE VISUAL AID DOWN] The breasts are not always exactly the same size or shape. They are incompletely developed at birth and in men they remain small and undeveloped unless subjected to abnormal hormonal stimulation. Pregnancy and nursing cause further increases in breast size. As a woman ages, the fatty tissue of the breast may become more prominent than the glandular tissue, and the breast may feel softer. The breasts gradually shrink after menopause (the end of menstruation). Point#3: Now let me finish by providing you with some information on how breast cancer is treated. It is important that patients are able to evaluate treatment options and to understand how cancer treatments are evaluated and described so that they can work with their physician to make informed treatment choices. Some risks posed by various cancer treatments may include time away from family and friends, uncomfortable side effects of therapy and/or long-term complications or death. Depending on the stage of cancer, one or more treatment modalities may be required to achieve the best results. Cancer treatments aim to prevent the ca...
