... 1. Sub-subpoint: ASL is the language of the Deaf community. They feel that the only people that can truly know and say they use this language is Deaf people themselves. This language has it’s own syntax, grammar, slang’s and so on. 2. Sub-subpoint: Pidgin sign language is a combination of ASL and manually coded English. This is said to be what hearing people that are fluent in sign use. Because they are not Deaf it’s not called ASL because they aren’t a part of the Deaf culture. 3. Sub-subpoint: From here the signing systems become hearing created. This means we (hearing people) created them to communicate with family that is deaf friends and so on. The one Standard English signing system is Manually coded English and this is when you sign everything that you say. Transition: Now having talked about the system of communication that people who are deaf use lets take a look at their culture. II. Second Main Point: According to the website sign media one can adopt either of two opposing perspectives when interacting with the Deaf Community. These two perspectives are called the pathological and the cultural model. A. Sub-point: The first view, pathological is a view based on the normal functioning hearing people in society. Researchers of this group are generally non-deaf or hearing professionals who only interact with the Deaf community on professional bases. 1. Sub-sub point: Therefore to deaf people this is an outsiders view on how they are different from hearing people. 2. Sub-subpoint: It is also a view that looks at deaf people as having something wrong with them. 3. Sub-subpoint: Individuals with this perspective would believe that people within the deaf community are people whose hearing loss interferes with the normal reception of speech. Or they are people who are not normal because they cannot hear. B. Sub-point: The cultural view of the deaf community is a much more positive interpretation of being deaf. 1. Sub-subpoint: People within this view would say that the deaf community is a group of people sharing a common language and common culture. 2. Sub-subpoint: People who are deaf as you can see are proud to be deaf. They don’t feel that they have a disability. They are proud to be deaf, just like we are proud to be hearing. It is something that they were born with and something that they work with. C. Sub-point: For each hearing person deciding which view of the deaf culture you feel is right will determine the relationship that you hold within the Deaf community. Your attitudes towards them and their culture determine your perspective of their lifestyle. 1. Sub-subpoint: So just as we would like to be called disabled by them for being able to hear they are the same. They don’t like to be looked down upon for their fortune.
