Man with a Movie Camera
...ring the mid 1920's. In this sense many people compare this film to Berlin, however I feel that “The Man with a Movie Camera” captures life on a grandeur scale. The film shows: people talking to each other in the city, workers operating machinery, people shopping and selling goods, technology of the time, home life, architecture, and the activities of people during their leisure hours. A great amount of perspectives are captured within the duration of the film. Most importantly Vertov’s creation of capturing shots on camera of “life unaware”- meaning the subjects were being filmed unknowingly in order to prevent them from acting differently under the view of the camera. This became a dominant force in film making to come. Vertov succeeds in this film in editing, along with creative uses of camera placement and new and innovative choices for camera motion. The second film of the day was a modern day documentary by Mike Rubbo. The film is about the growth and rise of Plastic Surgery through the eyes of an outspoken yet very emotional old lady- Daisy.
