...elist delivered his work through different people to keep his identity hidden. The newsman did not know what to expect and was anxious to meet the mystery novelist. When the newsman entered the office he immediately saw the muscular, middle-aged, Vietnamese novelist. After apologizing for being pressed for time, the novelist began to tell the newsman a short biography of his life. Tired of traditional war novels, the mystery novelist stated that his next work would be about the nameless men who fought bravely and died. After the quick autobiography, the novelist asked the newsman if he read Graham Greene’s “The Quiet American”. The newsman thought Greene’s novel was cynical, but he liked it. The novelist thought “The Quiet American” was terrible. He felt that way because he provided Greene with his personal material, so he knew that the book was not accurate. The novelist said “It’s a novel to please European readers” (Kaiko, 342). The main reason the novelist thought that “The Quiet American” was terrible is because Greene did not understand his country.
