...es the poems so very different is the feelings we get when we read them, and really look into their core. “Crossing the Bar” and “Prospice” were written for similar but different reasons. “Crossing the bar” was written in a time when Tennyson had finally accepted the death of his precious friend Hallam, when he had begun, again, to have faith in God, and when he ultimately concluded that death is not so bad after all. On the other hand “Prospice” was written right after Browning’s wife died. The poem laments his yearning to one day see her again, but yet his acceptance of the battle he will endure to stay alive. “Crossing the bar” is so peaceful.
