...y Simon and I who built the third and that's why its so tottery, it could easily fall down if it rains. And then there's the situation with the lavatories, we decided to use the rocks beyond the bathing pool, but now the littluns go anywhere. And as i try to explain this they just laugh! What am i meant to do? I try to explain to them that it's dirty. Then I started talking to them about the fire. I want them to understand how the fire is the most important thing on the island. We can never be rescued, except by luck, if the fire goes out. We ought to die before we let the fire go out. And when i said this there was giggling from the hunters! We have got to make smoke up there or we will die! And there wont be any other fires on the island apart from the one on the mountain. Because people will therefore always have to go up there so it will be check on regulary. And people have to do what I say because I'm chief! They voted me for chief! And things are breaking up. I don't understand why. We began well; we were happy. And then people started getting frightened. The littluns' talk they're frightened, I'm frightened as well sometimes but we need to decide that there's nothing in it. It's nonsense like bogies. After i said this to the group Jack stood up taking the conch and started saying that the littluns' started all this with their fear talk. And he said about how they scream at night and that was just nightmares. And he said that they were a lot of cry-babies and sissies and tat they dont hunt or build or help. And then, and then he said "As for the fear- you'll have to put up with that like the rest of us" I couldn't believe it! Then Piggy tried to explain that there was nothing to fear as it's not scientific. And that the only thing there is to fear is people. Then some of the children started saying how they had seen the beast of what they thought they'd seen. And then Percival said something whick made all of the other littlins' cry histerically and they wouldn't stop I yelled at them to shut up but they wouldn't.
