...cellular telephones, e-mail and the Internet exploded onto the scene almost simultaneously. Society experienced an information technology overload. News outlets such as CNN broadcast live news coverage from around the world, around the world 24 hours a day 7 days a week. International news and information is also readily available at one’s fingertips on the Internet. The Internet makes it possible for obscure and little stories that might otherwise not be known, to have international exposure. People are able to constantly in touch via their cell phones and e-mail. Cell phones have become so popular that they have become a nuisance and somewhat of a hazard because they are used inappropriately. For instance, people use their cell phones while in a movie theater or while driving. Rapid communication and instant news has changed how people live in many ways. People are now able to watch a breaking news story as it happens, pretty much anywhere in the world. High speed police chases and daring rescues are almost common place on television. One evening I was watching a live CNN broadcast from Kuwait and I along with millions of others witnessed history as it happened. We saw the first bomb dropped on Iraq starting the Gulf War. Early election results have been announced, this has been known to affect the voter turnout on the West Coast. The public has been informed of dangerous or inconvenient traffic situations and they have been able to avoid them. Also, warnings of impending bad weather have help the public prepare for the storms and remain safe. All of this is because of modern communication technology. I think that the “communication revolution” has definitely made my life different than that of my great grandparents. There are many health and safety issues that have been greatly affected by communication technology. These situations have been made better. For example, if there has been an outbreak of hepatitis on a college campus, or if a dangerous fugitive has been spotted in a particular neighborhood, getting this information out to the public as soon as possible could help save lives. My great grandparents did not have this chance. My husband and I are from Ohio, and all of our family is still there. It is very difficult for us to be away from everyone.
