A great deal of schools have special programs that consist of tutors which sole purpose is helping athletes meet minimum standards. It’s almost to the point that academics have became secondary. Colleges are corrupting their educational institutions by creating lower admission standards for athletes. The average SAT score in an Ivy League school is much lower then the general student population. With some exceptions, the college admission SAT score for an athlete only has to exceed 820. This is around 200 points lower that the national average. On the opposing side, people feel that major college athletic programs produce a great deal of money through television fees, massive quantities of ticket sales, and any other means of revenue. Ladenson). This is why certain individuals feel student athletes deserve more than just free Schooling. I agree, life wouldn’t be as hard for student athletes without their involvement in a sport. A large portion of these athletes are recruited from lower class families. This makes it harder for some individuals to stay financially stable when away from home. Student athletes are slowly fading away from what it mean to participate in a college sport. They have created a trend of committing illegal activities which have left fans disappointed. The lack of funds is one of the main reasons why student athletes are doing petty crimes.The NCAA adopted the “Prop 62", which would give student athletes the opportunity that non-athlete students have always enjoyed. If this law is passed this will give athletes the chance to hold a job if they desire. The ongoing debate about paying athletes money for participating at a college level is nearly resolved.
