...rgues for the importance of understanding cultural values in both oneself and others, and highlights the special need for teachers to understand that cultural values can be made explicit in classrooms to enhance learning. Cultural diversity is perhaps the most complex issue facing the teachers and their students. The complexity of the issue seems to be made even more complex by the inability to find decent resources for the teacher and the classroom. Before reading this article I often found myself wondering where I would turn if I were faced with an issue in the classroom. Xiaodong interviewed both students and teachers from diverse back rounds and discovered their own cultural unawareness is often invisible to them. Lin Xiaodong offers several examples of Multimedia-based avenues to reflection on culture for use by students and teachers. He then used these avenues and saw great progress in the cultural attitudes of the surveyed students and teachers. Generally speaking the collection methods in his study seem solid although It could be argued Xiaodong should better define what he terms as “Cultural unawareness” as the definition is somewhat unclear in the article.
