...w York, New York Description: The artistic period of this painting is the rose period. It shows a boy holding a pipe in his hands. The first thing I noticed form this painting was the boy sitting down with the blue shirt. Also I noticed that in his left hand he was holding a pipe. He was also wearing a rose hat of some sort, and there were roses behind him. The painting of Boy With a Pipe was added to the rose period because it has many roses in the picture. The Boy is also a circus performer, and they were also related with the rose period. After years of extreme poverty and hardship he finally found employment as a police reporter for the New York Tribune in 1877. In the 1880s his work gravitated towards reform and he worked with other New York reformers then crusading for better living conditions for the thousands of immigrants flocking to New York in search of new opportunities.
