abortion
...he union of sperm with an egg cell. (Webster’s Dictionary) This development is referred to as embryonic stage of development. These collections of cells are referred to as an embryo until they begin to develop human characteristics. (Stages Prenatal Developments) A fetus according to Dictionary.com is: in humans, the unborn young from the end of the eighth week after conception to the moment of birth, as distinguished from the earlier embryo. According to the scientific definitions a “fetus” has no right to be inside the body of another human being, because no such right exists. Yet, this is the only kind of 'right' it requires to exist. To grant the fetus such a right, would make its host, the pregnant mother, a slave. Slavery is not a right. This in essence is the case for a woman's moral right to abortion: a fetus is not an actual human being, but is only human tissue inside the body of an actual human being. Rights only apply to actual human beings (whether a new born child, or a hundred year old grandfather, or a pregnant woman), as they require freedom to act by the use of their mind. The stage of conception, indicates no government interference, nor is there a mention of government in the childbearing procedure. That brings to mind the question of who gives government the right to manipulate women’s personal life? In an effort to end government tyranny over women nearly one million people participated in the March for Women's Lives on the national Mall in support of reproductive rights. March officials estimated the crowd as being one of the largest ever on the Mall. Marchers called on American lawmakers to stop intruding on a woman's right to access critical reproductive health services. Women, men and children from all fifty states and the territories were joined by elected officials and celebrities during the march from the White House to the Capitol. Activists from 56 countries traveled to Washington to protest the Global Gag Rule, which prohibits non-governmental organizations that receive U.S. funding from promoting abortion rights. (online NAF) The rights of women have always been scrutinized by men. Women could not vote until the late 30’s and now in the year 2004, over one million women are being heard, they will not loose their right to choose. The American Civil Liberties Union defends the Constitution and peoples’ rights. ACLU has protected the rights of abortion for women, and in recent years has argued mayor cases opposing restrictions that deny woman access to reproductive health care (“ACLU”). Policy 263 states: “The ACLU holds that every woman, as a matter of her right to the enjoyment of life, liberty, and privacy, should be free to determine whether and when to bear children.” (American Civil Liberties Union). The constitution of California states that government can not interfere with a woman’s privacy: “The legislature finds and declares that every individual possesses a fundamental right of privacy with respect to personal reproductive decisions. . . . Every individual has the fundamental right to choose or refuse birth control. Every woman has the fundamental right to choose to bear a child or to choose and to obtain an abortion. . . . The state shall not deny or interfere with a woman’s fundamental right to choose to bear a child or to choose and obtain an abortion. . . .” CAL. HEALTH & SAFETY CODE § 123462 (West, WESTLAW through October 7, 2003). . Pro-life activists claim that the unborn babies are alive and with feelings when the heart begins beating. But, the heartbeat begins between the eighteenth and twenty-fifth day (“Fetus”). They also say that women who have abortions are “murderers”. This problem could be solved by keeping not banning abortion, because then the woman can be treated before the twenty fifth day when the fetus is not yet a living baby. She will not have to wait because of long waiting lists, but instead will have the abortion as soon as possible with as less psychological pain. The banning of abortion would be done with the purpose of reducing the number of abortions. This raises the question whether this will be an effective method or not. Before 1973 abortions were illegal yet the number of women who sought abortions did not decrease. Before 1973 many thousands of women died or suffered serious medical problems after attempting to perform their own abortions, or going to untrained doctors who performed cheap abortions with uncivilized methods or in unsanitary conditions ( Abortion Law Homepage.). If clinics are closed, women will still continue to attempt, and succeed, in ending unwanted pregnancies just like before 1973. Women will risk their health and possibly even their lives. By keeping these abortions clinics open it ensures a higher probability that the women who do have abortions will be in a safe, sanitary environment, and therefore injuries will be fewer in number. If abortion is banned, the waiting lists of abortion clinics in other countries will be much longer. Women will have to wait longer to get an abortion, and will be treated later in their pregnancy which is much more dangerous for the pregnant women. Now based on the definitions the accurate creation of a “baby/infant” begins with the male sperm cell and the female egg cell. A sperm and an unfertilized egg jointly comprise the full genetic blueprint for a human being: “Under certain circumstances, after fertilization, they can develop into a baby. But most fertilized eggs are spontaneously miscarried. Development into a baby is by no means guaranteed. Neither a sperm and egg separately, nor a fertilized egg, is more than a potential baby or a potential adult. So if a sperm and egg are as human as the fertilized egg produced by their union, and if it is murder to destroy a fertilized egg despite the fact that it's only potentially a baby--why isn't it murder to destroy a sperm or an egg?” (Sagan) Hundreds of millions of sperm cells are produced in an average human ejaculation. A healthy young man can produce in a week or two enough sperm to double the human population of the Earth. Does that make masturbation mass murder?” — Senator John Kerry sees the absurdity in Bush’s “potential human” and is diligently advocating for freedom of choice. Kerry supports people who have night emissions, and menstrual cycles whom do not want to feel like assassin. Bush recognizes the abortion/choice issue both of these unplanned bodily functions would be de...
