Doing wheelies on public roads could result in a trip to your local emergency room, a reckless driving ticket, or worse, killed. Clutching up a wheelie is the most predictable method because the steps can easily be duplicated. In an open area, start with the bike in second gear with the RPM at about one third or one half of the motorcycles max RPM. RPM stands for revolutions per minute and basically means the speed at which the engine is operating. This will be roughly 5000-7000 RPM on the average sportbike. Don’t just let go of the clutch, let it out in a quick, but controlled manner. If this was done correctly the front wheel should be about 3 feet off of the ground with the RPM at about eight or nine thousand and the throttle mostly open. At this point the roll off of the throttle some to keep the bike at a steady speed and to keep it from going over backward. Undoubtedly the first time a motorcyclist tries to complete this maneuver they will get scared, not give it enough gas and the front wheel will rise only inches from the ground. The only way to become proficient at wheelies is to practice and to overcome the fear of flipping ov...
