America’s obsession with the S.U.V.

While the family sedan generally gets decent gas mileage, it has limited seating and cargo space, and it also usually lacks the power that a lot of people crave. Most trucks, however, have plenty of room to haul anything that a person might want to transport. However trucks lack the gas mileage and the seating offered by the sport utility vehicle. The S.U.V. is a happy median for most people between truck and car. With most of these vehicles offering seats that may be removed or simply rearranged to make room for cargo, or people these vehicles are very versatile. Many people look at these big vehicles and find that the seemingly endless uses and tremendous power are the most appealing features. Driving an S.U.V. gives the perception that the driver is ready to take on any challenge that he or she might encounter. The power and uses, however, are not the only reasons that people may want an S.U.V. The enormous size of these vehicles provides comfort because in case there was an accident there would be a better chance for survival. Unfortunately, these vehicles provide a false sense of security because a sport utility is more likely to roll over than a car. This false sense of security is very prominent among women with eighty percent of all sport utility purchases influenced by them. With dominating features like being able to look over the tops of other cars the driver gets the sense that they are safer. The S.U.V. is also a status symbol because it seems like every celebrity is driving one. In the past celebrities have set most of the trends in America. So once celebrities started purchase these enormous vehicles the public wanted also had to buy them. A sport utility gives a higher than life perception of things for many people. Now it seems like anyone who can afford these expensive vehicles is driving one. While a sport utility vehicle may be a status symbol, there is a reason for this.
