Catholocism and Ethnocentrism
...ave the same beliefs and in some cases they are not in agree with the thoughts of their parents and with the religion of their families. This is the specify case of María Fernanda Garrido, who grows up in a catholic family, with a catholic education. Now, with 19 years old, Mafer don not believe in the catholic religion and its church. In her words: “I think that the catholic church is very corrupt, there are a lot of bureaucracy and the people has a lot of fait and because of that the “High Commands” abuse of them”. I, Jahel Caldera, as part of a task, decide to provide to Mafer information that make that her ethnocentrism, which refers to judging other groups from our own cultural point of view and make false assumptions about others ways, based on our own limited experience (Barrer, 2004) change to an ethnorelativism, which means not judging others ways and accepting them as equal to our own (Coverdell). That does not mean that Mafer must to be a catholic and follow this religion; the point is that she must to understand that this religion is not that wrong, and that she must to accept the differences. First, as any conversation between friends, I ask her about the Catholicism. Mafer answer me that she does not believe in that, although her parents were very catholic persons. She told me that the problem is that this religion has a close mind to the world, and sentence a lot of things that in our days are common. After I listen to her, I told her that she has to take in consideration that the Catholic Church is a human institution and as every human has mistakes. I told her that the truthful meaning of this religion is what Jesus Christ does for us, what he tell us and the love that he prove to everyone (catholic.org). Before we discuss, she argue that all that was very nice, and that I was right in some aspects, but that does not mean that she will be accepted this religion and his way to manipulate masses. Therefore, I explain her that she can not generalize, that if some human, a old priest, tell her that she must suffer for being on heaven when she die, it was because this guy has learned in that way, but if she look the background of the words of Jesus Christ, who is the only human who had the power to forgive or judge (Mier, 2004), she will find interesting things about it. In that moment, Mafer have to go to class. I told her that I will like to talk more with her about this topic, she smile and say “sure” and she left me. Two days after the first meeting, finally I could find a moment with María Fernanda to continue with our conversation and my study. She told me that the other day I make her to think in my asseverations. I say to her that that was good, and that my purpose it was not evangelize her, that it was just make her understand that the catholic religion it was not that bad if she understand the concepts as the original version, just how Christ said and not how some priest or our grandma tell us. Therefore she smile and tell to me that the fact of generalize it really was for close minded and that thinking in the theme, she already believe that Christ maybe just was a very nice ...
