...arry. According to www.religioustolerance.com, on July 9, 2003 same-sex marriages became permitted in both Canadian provinces of British Columbia and Ontario. Any adult same-sex couple from any country can come to one of these two provinces, buy a marriage license and get married. The government of Taiwan is drafting legislation to legalize gay marriages. Many people believe that same-sex marriage will eventually become available to all loving, committed couples throughout the U.S.A. and Western Europe. In Vermont the arrangement is called a civil union. A state legislature could create a similar system for two men or two women. It would grant some or all of the 400 average state benefits that have been granted before. Around 1,000 federal rights and privileges that married couples get automatically withheld form “civil unionized” couples because of the federal DOMA law. The DOMA law prevents the federal government from approving civil unions. The state of California is now allowing a system of domestic partnerships similar to civil unions. What is not legalizing same-sex marriages really going to accomplish? The government shouldn’t interfere with same gender couples that choose to share equal rights, tasks and obligations of civil marriage.
