The whole idea of imperialism contradicts the values of America and its background of liberty and freedom. The U.S. needs to take care of its own responsibilities first, before getting into other countries. By expanding and controlling other countries, America must deal with the hostility and competition from other nations and the ones being over run. When America went to war against Spain, it claimed the lives of 5,000 Americans due to fighting and disease. America won this war and became imperialistic to Guam, Puerto Rico and the Philippines. In the Philippines, Filipinos who had fought for their independence from Spain felt betrayed by the United States. In response, they revolted against American rule. For three years, groups fought American troops. Just a century ago America had fought against Great Britain for their independence. Becoming an imperialistic nation contradicts our American ideals. The countries America took over all had their own cultures and religious beliefs. Their cultures were not always advanced as the Americas, so America felt the need to c...
