Even a trained mind can in fact be untrained. If John is subjected to the same anxiety he has been experiencing up until his argument with Mustapha Mond, his mind will eventually become so tired of enduring such psychological stress, it will just give up. Even though everything introduced to John in the World State clashes with everything he has learned. Once his mind has gone in shut-down mode, new behavior patterns can be easily established, making it possible for John to conform to the society. ( Brave New World Revisited, Aldous Huxley, 61-62 ) The Statement If Huxley had written the ending differently, and John had become just another one of Mond’s successes as a dictator, the whole scene a the litghthouse would never have taken place. So if John were to live in the World State, it would be logical to suppose that some sort of relationship would take place between himself and Lenina. The strong attraction between the two of them could render more than just lust, but would create a problem and probably would just result in the relationship coming to an end. The vision of Lenina with her arms outstretched and tears in her eyes would not have taken place. The acts of desperation that John takes part in before he kills himself would not have taken place either. Therefore, the ending of the book would have a completely different impact. The events leading up to John’s death, and the fact that he kills himself make a certain statement that Huxley is conveying to his readers. By killing himself, John is denying his life.
