...und a hypermasculinity that depended on the denigration of the female” (Vojdik par. 3). When asked about the issue of allowing women into their institution, the Citadel’s spokesman, Major Rick Mill, said, “We know how to train young men to be men. We don’t know how to train young women to be men”(Vojdik par. 3). The military academies are based on traditions and rules that they go by. When you bring women into these schools, these rules and traditions must be changed because the academies are scared that they will offend women. One tradition is that the cadets are forced to have their heads shaved when they are freshmen. Many people argue that this degrades women and takes away their femininity. The Citadel argues that this is a rite of passage and a tradition. Cadets are also called vulgar names and are always subject to abusive language. If women get offended by this, then there is a good chance that they will try to file a lawsuit against the academy. The academies must also provide the women with separate housing and bathroom facilities from the men. This would require major construction and would cost a lot of money. “The president of the Virginia Military Institute testified that the admission of women into the Citadel would be like a “toxic kind of virus” that would destroy the school” (Vojdik par.1). The introduction of women into these schools would slowly change the traditions started by their founders. These military academies are not the place for a woman. At the Virginia Military Institute, cadets were subject to unauthorized workouts, physical violence, minimal sleep, ritual spankings, and whippings. Women who have attended these academies were treated with hostility by other cadets. When Shannon Faulkner became the first female to attend the Citadel, she was harassed daily. “Citadel alumni sold the infamous “1952 Bulldogs and One Bitch” t-shirts” (Vojdik par. 299). Faulkner was harassed and humiliated until she finally quit the academy after such a long fight to get in. This shows how hard it is for a woman to maintain an enrollment in a school like the Citadel. Studies show that single-gender education is the best learning environment for many students. “They are more likely to pursue higher educational degrees, and are more likely to attain positions of leadership in their communities” (Hawkins par. 5). Students of single-gender schools perform better than those that are co-ed. “This might explain why half of the women in Congress are graduates of women-only colleges, and why 40 percent of the CEOs in South Carolina are Citadel graduates” (Hawkins par. 6). This shows th...
