At that time there were approximately ten million “Indians”, as Columbus labeled them, living above what is present day Mexico.# Soon after Europeans arrived in America, conflict arose between the Natives and the new-comers over the materialistic view of the Europeans of the land and its resources, which the Indians had no concept of, not to mention the lack of respect that the white men had for their culture. This led to fighting and warfare in which the Europeans had a huge advantage in weapons and numbers, because all the Indian tribes were not united in the struggle. In the 1830’s President Andrew Jackson passed the Indian Removal Act which forced the huge Cherokee Tribe to march westward at the hands of the U.S. army. This trip has since been referred to as the “Trail of Tears” because of the exhaustion, hunger, disease, and the severe weather that took place.# For the next sixty years there were many other forced marches that occurred. Also there were many massacres where Indian men, women, and children were slaughtered, Wounded Knee in South Dakota in the 1890’s being one such example. However, these past injustices that occurred over one hundred years ago hardly seem relevant to the current day tax systems that allow Native Americans such extreme advantages the tax-paying Americans can barely compete.
