...l. The word was given for the swimmers to step up on the blocks, now ready then ever. When the buzzer sounded, he was off, going out in a pool record pace, now well a head of all the other swimmers. He now only had to race against the clock. The pool now so loud you couldn't hear yourself think. John coming out of his turn in to the last twenty-five, still just on pool record time and finishing with all he had touching the time pad. Exhausted looking up at his time. Had he done it? He asked himself. Then seeing on the deck J.A.Highs swim coach. Standing there to be the first to congratulate him on beating his record after twenty years. John had done it. Still shocked he had beaten it. Beaten by 5 hundredths of a second. After that victory John went to a party that the team and his friends had thrown for him. At this party there was a lot of drinking going on. John was getting a little carried away after a few he was taking drinks from people not knowing who they were or what he was drinking. The next week was State the big meet. John was pumped, yet still nervous. This time his future depended on it. Collage scouts were going to be there. Practicing non-stop, just trying to prepare himself for the big day. The night before the meet all the swimmers had to take a drug test. It was the first year for this test. A new rule that the conference had added. John not worried at knowing that he has never taken any drugs. John was starting to get ready, focusing. This is what he as been waiting for all year the STATE MEET. That day he was stoked ready for anything not worried at all anymore about any scouts, just ready to swim. He was in a warm up lane right next to this guy named Mike Miller. He was the kid he touched out last year at the state meet to sweep away the championship. Mike also was a big rival to John. Going to the school on the East Side of his town. John has been nothing but competition to Mike all year. John resting, and ready to do another set, his coach and the officials came up to him and asked John to come talk to them for a minute. John was asked to grab his things and he was out of the meet. John confused asks what was going on and they told him that he had tested positive for steroids.
