...y are young school going age 5 to 18 years but attend neither primary nor secondary school or any other institution. They are totally out of reach of social control provided for children of their age. They are children who more or less lost the usual reference of usual social life and identity. They are children in circumstances who struggle to survive in urban or suburban areas and who often fall of the law. They look for substitute for family security from their companions or specialized institutions. These children have experienced social exclusion for long so they organize or join gangs to defend themselves. They stay in slum quarters, grounds around cinemas, railway/bus/lorry stations, wasteland, unoccupied dwellings and buildings and staircases. They have lost the usual references of social life and their individual identity. CAUSES OF TREET CHILDREN The issue of street children has been a major concern in the present day society. The problem is not only in Uganda but it is a global problem according to In Uganda the problem dates back to the 1970’s, arising mainly from civil wars, declining wages and changes in welfare programs, peer pressure, poverty, domestic violence, globalization, adolescence and its related pressures, pregnancy in case of girls, separation of parents, loss of parents, poor performance at school, false hopes, lack of education, running away from crimes to mention but a few. There are those children are inevitably ejected to the streets due to very unbearable circumstances and there are those who are just attracted by other children and ‘’liberty’’ at the streets. THE PROBLEMS FACED BY STREET CHILDREN The street children are faced with various problems; · Poverty and illiteracy- they have no means to afford a decent living, food and clothing. · Discrimination · Violent environment- because of the need to protect themselves, they also turn out to be violent. · Stigmatization- they are perceived as difficult children who are out to cause trouble in society. · Lack of adequate nutrition. · Sex and reproductive health problems- they are vulnerable to physical and sexual abuse and exploitation. · Psychological and mental problems. · Diseases- for example cough, skin disease, T.B, sexually transmitted diseases and dental problems. · Crime- as a way to survive they commit many crimes. · Lack of jobs. · Accidents · Exploitation by different categories of people and themselves NEEDS Street children like any other child need to have boarding and lodging where to sleep, they need food affection/love, clothing, medical care, shelter, money, acceptance, protection, recreation and relation.
