Literature and the Key to Human Essence

...usty with sugar, and the smell would be so sweet. Thus, without being exposed to either of these scents while reading the poem I still could remember what they both smelled like. Just as the sense, smell is important, so is the other sense that goes well with it which is tastes. Taste is a unique sense it gives people the ability to decide what types of food brings their taste buds joy and what types bring it pain. Taste can be found in all sort of literature work because once a certain type of food is mention it usually makes the reader think back to when they experience that certain food or even makes them want to try the food the writer is talking about. Some times that experience can be negative with foods that tasted horrid or it can be very positive with foods that bring back good memories of maybe home cooked meals. For example, in the movie smoke signals the character Thomas is telling Victor about a certain type of Native American food "I remember one time we had fry bread eating contest and he ate fifteen pieces of fry bread. It was so cool"(smoke signals). The reason why this quote helps me to use my taste sense is that I have had the pleasure of tasting fry bread during a Native American holiday called Feast Day. It is very strange how I could taste this type of bread while seeing it in the movie, even though it has been years since I have actually tasted it. Just like all the other senses are useful, hearing is very important for many reason such as giving us a way to hear the sound the character might be experiencing through imagination. It is very hard to really hear the exact sounds that are going on at that very specific time during a literature work. However, this is where imagination plays a crucial role in deciding which sounds seem to be heard that people can relate to due to their experience with that type of sound. During on of the stories called The War Prayer written by Mark Twain I could hear many different types of sounds in just a couple of sentences. "The drums were beating, the bands playing, the toy pistols popping, the bunched firecrackers Hissing and sputtering." this example truly shows how the five senses are important to literature pieces. While reading this quote it is hard not to think of times when event like this occurred. I could seriously recall hearing all those sound as a young child during a Fourth of July celebration or even a fiesta. Thus, the use of the sense hearing can help bring back memories of sounds when we were children yet can be so fresh in our memories until this very day. The sense Touch is a very different from all the other sense the reason why is because cause it deals with the sensation of feeling many things. A great example of this is when a poet uses terms to try to describe how certain sanitation feel against the human body in his poem. While the reader read such literature material, they could practically feel what the poet is trying to explain due to the strong use of using an imagination. Touch can strongly help describe the certain way object feels. For instance, in Oedipus Rex written by Sophocles the main character Oedipus lost his human eyes. "Could I but touch them, they would be mine again, as when I had my eyes."(201). This quote shows how important the character eyes were to him. He states that he wishes he could feel his daughters touch once more like the way it felt when his eyes placed into his eye sockets. This was a great way of showing how important his daughter are to Oedipus because after losing his eye sight forever all he could ...
